History investigation

October 23, 2009

In History we have been finding out about the wives of Henry VIII. One afternoon the class looked at historical sources like letters, marriage certificates and paintings. They had to think like historians to work out what facts these sources told them about Henry’s wives. They found out lots of facts, and found out that you can’t always find out everything from sources from history and just have to find out what you can.

Manga Avatars

October 17, 2009

On Friday afternoon we were testing out a new system for our netbooks (Ubuntu Netbook Remix). We went on FaceYourManga and made Manga versions of ourselves. Avatars are important on the internet. You use them instead of a photo so people you don’t know can’t see what you really look like. They help you keep safe.

Some children had a competition to make an avatar of Mr Quinlan, which one do you think looks most like him? You can vote for your favourite below….

Kandinsky Art Work

October 12, 2009

In Art we have been looking at the work of Kandinsky. We looked at his work based on shapes in our Maths lessons and described the shapes using their properties. Then we discussed abstract art, seeing what his paintings made us think of, and what he was trying to show in them. We talked about how Kandinsky used sharp, straight shapes for certain feelings, and round, smooth ones for others.

Mr Quinlan then showed the class how to use the shape tools, and the copy, paste and rotate functions on our netbooks. These are some of the pictures 4OQ made in the style of Kandinsky using the netbooks. Some children chose to create kaleidoscopic designs using these tools, others were inspired by Kandinsky’s less organised paintings and worked on representing their own themes and feelings using shapes.
